“Culture of Protest” host Prof. Dick Flacks says of tonight’s broadcast: “In September 1949 Paul Robeson, one of the most famous performers of his time, gave a concert at Peekskill, NY, that was greeted by howling violent mobs. It was a key moment in the emergence of the red scare. This mostly forgotten event is being remembered this month with concerts in Peekskill and other observances. We’ll hear a rare documentary recording about the events (featuring Howard Fast and the Weavers) and Paul Robeson’s voice as activist and artist, as celebrity and outcast. And ask whether these events are only in the past.”
“Culture of Protest” airs Thursdays from 6-7pm on KCSB.
