KCSB is pleased to announce a new role as media partner with the Fund for Santa Barbara, which is presenting the thirteenth edition of its Social Justice Award for Documentary Film 2012, part of the the 27th Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The festival runs from Thursday, January 26th through Sunday, February 5th.

As part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Fund for Santa Barbara recognizes a slate of documentary films dealing with critical social, economic, political and environmental issues. This year, nine feature films have been nominated, with the winning production receiving a $2,500 cash prize.

The nominated films are:

A People Uncounted, about oppression of Europe’s largest minority group, the Roma (“Gypsies”);

Aung San Suu Kyi – Lady of No Fear, which tells the story of an under-fire Burmese activist;

Dirty Energy, the story rebuilding efforts after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil disaster;

Give Up Tomorrow, about the testing of the Phillipines’ embattled judicial system by a double-murder case involving an accused teen from an elite family;

Heist: Who Stole the American Dream? about recent battles of the U.S. “class war”;

Into the Current: Burma’s Political Prisoners, about the price Burmeses political prisoners pay for speaking truth to dictatorial power;

Letters From Iran, a portrait of the aftermath of Iran’s recent Green Revolution;

Pink Ribbons, Inc., about the disturbing reality of corporate-cause marketing campaigns to fight breast cancer;

Putin’s Kiss, which depicts a young woman’s coming of age against the backdrop of modern Russian politics.

On Friday, January 27th, the Fund for Santa Barbara will host a reception with the nominated filmmakers at Sullivan Goss – An American Gallery/Arts & Letters Café (7 East Anapamu Street). Attendees will meet some of the nominated filmmakers and learn about their work. Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $25. Platinum Pass-holders are admitted free. As space is limited, reservations are requested.

The winning film will be announced at the Festival’s Closing Night Award Ceremony on Nov. 5th.
