Of his program Culture of Protest, Dick Flacks writes:

newport folk festival 1963, 50 years after

This week on the radio we remember a major event in the musical development of the 60s–its the 50th anniversary of the Newport Folk Music Festival of 1963–which brought together the new troubadours (Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs etc.), the music of the civil rights movement, and great roots musicians newly ‘discovered’. We’ll hear the stirring musical results–and of course take musical note as well of the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
