gottschallThis week on The Marketplace of Ideas, a conversation with Jonathan Gottschall, English instructor at Washington and Jefferson College and author of Literature, Science and a New Humanities. Academic literary studies, Gottschall argues, has lost its way: the discipline has fallen unmoored from truth and falsity and failed to come up with a method for producing reliable knowledge about literature. His book shows how the way forward may well be to adopt and adapt methods, attitudes and habits of mind from the natural and social sciences, bringing quantitative thinking and empirical rigor to a sector of the academy that has long lacked both.

The Marketplace of Ideas airs every Thursday at noon.
