black history month II: rosa & abe
We’ll observe the birthdays of two giants in black history—Rosa Parks, born February 5 102 years ago and Abe Lincoln. We’ll feature a long interview with Rosa Parks done during the Montgomery Bus Boycott in which she describes what led to her refusal to give up her seat.
And to honor Abe, we present a rare recording of the classic radio cantata ‘Lonesome Train’, a once famous but now forgotten portrayal of Lincoln as populist icon. Done on national network radio during World War II by Earl Robinson and Millard Lampell, the work was obscured when its authors were blacklisted in the 50s. “You couldn’t quite tell where the people left off and where Abe Lincoln began.”
