Of her next broadcast tonight (Sunday, March 20th), DJ Darla Bea says, “Class is in session!
Inspired by the recent documentary, The Wrecking Crew, by Denny Tedesco (who has ties to the Central Coast), my next lesson will explore the independent work of session musicians and backing bands.
According to the Santa Barbara Independent, The Wrecking Crew were ‘a loose-knit constellation of Los Angeles studio musicians that provided the essential sonic brick and mortar upon which so many pop hits were built.’ The group featured guitarist Glen Campbell, drummer Hal Blaine, bassist Carol Kaye, and multi-instrumentalist Tommy Tedesco, the director’s father. (The Wrecking Crew also play a role in last summer’s acclaimed Brian Wilson biopic, Love & Mercy).
According to ‘Darlapedia,; ‘Session musicians, also called studio musicians, are professional instrumental performers who can be hired to play at live performances or in recording sessions.’ These include other acts like Booker T & the MGs, The Jordanaires, The Funk Brothers, Billy Preston, Sly and Robbie, Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Neil Young, and more.
Join me as we again shift our focus away from the limelight, and honor the players behind the scenes, some of whom went on to great things all on their own. Get ready to rock out!”
“Rock It Properly” airs on Sundays during UCSB’s Winter schedule from 8-10pm PDT.
