During the week of April 10-12, best-selling comics creator Scott McCloud (Zot! and Understanding Comics), a Regents’ Lecturer in the Writing Program at UC Santa Barbara, appeared at a number of events, including an Arts & Lectures keynote talk in Campbell Hall on “Comics and Visual Communication.”

At the tail-end of his visit, “The Freak Power Ticket”‘s Ted Coe, along with Janessa Lea Puckett and Sean Mabry, hosts of KCSB’s new cultural-arts program “Freak Juice” (Tuesdays 2-4am) sat down with McCloud to reflect on the medium of “sequential art.”

understanding_comicsOpening with a tribute to the late UCSB Professor Frank McConnell, a champion of Comics Studies in Higher Education, the quartet discuss the still-emerging art-form of comics, even now shedding the cliche that it’s “just kids’ stuff”: a perception that McCloud’s groundbreaking Understanding Comics shows couldn’t be farther from the truth.

From 11am-12noon today, hear their half-hour conversation, interspersed with a selection of popular music inspired by the topic.

“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the Spring from 11am-12noon.
