On the April 7th edition of “Roadtunes Sessions,” Jan Smith, AKA Cuyama Mama, the vocalist/guitarist/bassist of Cuyama Mama & The Hot Flashes, was interviewed by DJ Philobeto ahead of her band’s April 8th appearance at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club.
What would a bunch of farmers do when the bar 3 miles down the road from their non-profit permaculture farm, Quail Springs, needs a band for their BBQ? They pick a name, make a song list, scrub off most of the dirt, put on their aprons, and suspenders, and play music for the people! Cuyama Mama & The Hot Flashes sets range from covers of musical heroes, Gillian Welch, Steve Earl, John Prine, Merle Travis, and more, to originals with an emphasis on story.
Hear Jan Smith tell the tale of Cuyama Mama & The Hot Flashes herself in this attached podcast, which can be downloaded or streamed via the player below.
The band’s next gig will be on Friday, April 24th, 6pm at the Cold Spring Tavern. “Roadtunes Sessions” airs on Tuesdays in the spring from 8-10pm PDT.
