On Thursday, October 2nd, KCSB-FM 91.9 and Granada Books: A Community Bookstore will present a talk by “Alternative Radio” producer and author David Barsamian in downtown Santa Barbara. This 1st Thursday event starts at 6pm (with a wine-and-cheese reception at 530pm) and is free and open to the public. It also kicks off KCSB-FM’s Fall 2014 “It’s Not Just In Your Head” Events Calendar.
On the heels of Professor Noam Chomsky’s noteworthy appearances at the Lobero Theatre and at UC Santa Barbara in February, his frequent co-author David Barsamian (who co-wrote the recent Metropolitan Books release Power Systems: Conversations on Global Democratic Uprisings and the New Challenges to U.S. Empire) will present a public lecture on the topic of “Media, Capitalism, and the Environment.”
A radio broadcast of the Chomsky lecture at the Lobero was produced by — and heard live on — KCSB-FM and later aired on “Alternative Radio,” among other radio outlets.
Barsamian’s title “Media, Capitalism, and the Environment” is derived from the general structure of his recent talks: beginning with major media’s complicity in obfuscating important issues, he then gives a rundown of the perils of rapacious “free market capitalism” and the threat it presents to our planet.
David Barsamian is the founder and director of “Alternative Radio,” the weekly independent audio series on public-affairs issues now in its 28th year. Based in Boulder, Colorado, and with 35 years in radio, his interviews and articles also appear regularly in The Progressive and Z Magazine.
Other Barsamian titles include works with Tariq Ali, Arundhati Roy, Edward Said, and Howard Zinn. He is winner of the Media Education Award, the ACLU’s Upton Sinclair Award for independent journalism, and the Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. The Institute for Alternative Journalism has also named him one of its Top Ten Media Heroes. Barsamian speaks around the globe on U.S. foreign policy, the media, propaganda, and corporate power, and 2014 has been a very active year for him, with over forty speaking engagements at universities, stores, and benefits around the country.
This night will include a Q&A session and book signing.
