Among the many fine scenes in the 1982 movie Diner, there’s the one where two of the guys, both quite decidedly middle class if that, drive out of Baltimore into Maryland horse country. A stunning blonde in riding attire comes by on her gorgeous horse and says something witty, galloping away, blowing them off. One of the schlubs says to the other, “Do you ever get the feeling that there’s something going on that we don’t know about?” This week’s “Frank ‘n’ George” is all about that thing we don’t know about, or at least try to pretend doesn’t exist in America–social class. So, yes, a lot of the songs will come from the UK, where class is much more a thing, given they’ve got royalty and all (we just have Bushes and Clintons). But we will do our best to reach far and wide for comments on class from all sorts, for every Noel Coward a Fela Kuti, for every XTC a Circle Jerks (covering CCR, no less).
“Frank ‘n’ George” airs Tuesdays 9:30 am – 12 noon this summer.
