Well, say ‘Goodbye’ to 2014! I love to turn to Tennyson’s poem “Ring Out, Wild Bells” at this time of year. We’ll listen to Matthew Curtis’s (from Chanticleer) setting. December 29th happens to be the birth anniversary of Spanish cellist, conductor and nationalist Pablo Casals, so I will recount his relationship to the Cello Suites of J.S. Bach, and we will listen to a few tracks of those monumental recordings from the mid-1930’s.
We’ll also listen to Casals’s “Hymn to the United Nations,” first performed in 1971 on the occasion of the bestowing of the U.N. Medal of Peace on the great cellist, two months before his 95th birthday. December 30 is the birth anniversary of Russian composer, Dmitri Kabalevsky, so we will drive the tempo to a gallop with his suite “The Comedians” played by the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra.
A special year-end thanks from me to all my listeners, and the inspiring colleagues at KCSB-FM. Best wishes to each of you for a safe, inspiring, peace-inducing, healthy, prosperous 2015!
