On Tuesday, April 12th, KCSB 91.9 FM began twice a week airings of Al Jazeera English. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 530-6pm in the spring, KCSB will be broadcasting the Al Jazeera English news program.

Rapidly unfolding events in the Middle East during recent months compelled many U.S. media producers to rely on Al Jazeera English for comprehensive coverage of breaking news stories. KCSB-FM, the listener-supported community radio station based at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has decided to bring this unique source of information from around the globe to its listening-audience.

Al Jazeera English’s international reach and award-winning work complements KCSB’s mission to bring listeners material that is “stimulating, informative and generally unavailable from other local media.” KCSB-FM will become the first radio station in the Tri-Counties to present the work of this award-winning 24-hour international news and current affairs channel.

Al Jazeera English broadcasts from the four strategic locations of Doha, Qatar; Washington, DC; London, England; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With a staff of more than 1,000 from 50 different countries, working out of 65 bureaus around the world, the channel’s aim is to provide independent and impartial news for an international audience. It is widely seen as the channel of reference for coverage of the Middle East and global south. Its broadcasts reach more than 220 million households in more than 100 countries.

The half-hour news program will alternate in its KCSB timeslot with the independently-produced Free Speech Radio News, which will now air on three nights of the week (on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays). Al Jazeera English is distributed in the United States through the Pacifica Radio network, of which KCSB-FM is an affliate.
