As UCSB Reads celebrates its 9th year, KCSB-FM will again host a series of live readings each weekday starting Monday, January 26th, at 12noon PST. This year’s choice for UCSB Reads is Piper Kerman’s best-selling memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison. The book provides the source material for the Emmy-winning Netflix series.

Several discussions, panels, exhibitions, screenings, and other events open to the Santa Barbara community will culminate in Piper Kerman’s free lecture in Campbell Hall on Wednesday, April 15th at 8pm. Click HERE for an complete list of 2015 UCSB Reads events.

KCSB annually opens up its airwaves to students, faculty, staff, and members of the greater community to share in these on-air readings, which will take place Monday through Friday from 12-1215pm, beginning January 26th, through completion of the text. “UCSB Reads on KCSB” seeks to promote the community-wide educational experience provided by the UCSB Reads program, which brings the campus and Santa Barbara community together for a common reading experience.

Using Orange Is the New Black as a starting point, this year’s program aims to engage readers in dialogue about issues of local and national significance, including criminal justice, the war on drugs, and racial and sexual identity. Kerman’s book chronicles the humiliation, abuse, and indifference of prison staff experienced by those who are incarcerated, while also detailing “friendships with fellow inmates and relationships marked by generosity, wisdom and acceptance” (The UC Santa Barbara Current). Orange is the New Black was selected to be this year’s book by a panel of faculty, students, staff and community representatives.

KCSB’s first on-air reading (this coming Monday, January 26th) will be presented by Rebecca Metzger, UCSB Davidson Library’s Assistant University Librarian for Outreach and Academic Collaboration.

If you would like to volunteer as an on-air reader for KCSB Reads, please contact KCSB’s advisor Marta Ulvaeus at (805) 893-3921 or email

“UCSB Reads on KCSB” will air Mondays through Fridays throughout the Winter from 12-1215pm PST.
