On Thurs., Nov. 19th, 7:30pm in UCSB’s Campbell Hall, KCSB presents William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe, a new documentary about the late radical attorney William Kunstler. The filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler will be guests at this Santa Barbara premiere, for an introduction and post-film Q&A.
William Kunstler fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., defended the “Chicago 8” anti-war protesters, Attica inmates, and American Indian Movement activists who seized the town of Wounded Knee, S.D. In William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe, filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler create an intimate exploration of their father’s commitment to social justice and his overall legacy.
This event anticipates the 40th anniversary of the Isla Vista uprisings. [For movie trailer, click “continue.”]
William Kunstler was blamed by some for the events of Feb. 26th, 1970, as he addressed thousands at UCSB’s Harder Stadium on Feb. 25th in the aftermath of the “Chicago 8” trial. Later that night, the I.V. branch of Bank of America was torched.
KCSB played a significant role in that period. Not only did the station broadcast Kunstler’s talk live, KCSB was also briefly shut down by government officials a few months later, who accused its news reports of directing rioting in the streets of Isla Vista (the only shutdown of its kind in US history). Along with this special premiere, over the course of the next several months KCSB will also be re-broadcasting archival materials reflecting on that turbulent history.
This preview screening culminates KCSB’s annual fund-drive campaign (running Nov. 4th-13th), so current members can claim free priority admission on the night of the event. Due to the film’s imminent theatrical release (opening Nov. 20th in L.A.) seating in Campbell Hall will be about 2/3 capacity. The requested donation for others to attend this event is $10 (non-students)/$5 (students). The Presidio Motel, the Center for Film, Television, and New Media, and The Santa Barbara Independent are event co-sponsors.
