SANTA BARBARA, CA — This week, as part of 91.9 KCSB-FM’s Annual Fund Drive, Santa Barbara’s only community-radio station unveils its first-ever Live in Studio A compilation CD. Featuring nineteen tracks by an eclectic lineup of acts, the recording covers a number of genres, performed by artists hailing from as close to home as Goleta, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles, to as far away as Auckland, New Zealand, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

KCSB-FM’s programmers regularly invite artists to play live on the air in the studio under Storke Tower at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) campus. Recorded during 2013 and 2014, the CD features independent musicians like multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Rodrigo Amarante — a regular collaborator with Devendra Banhart — and two Los Angeles acts affiliated with Stones Throw Records, beatmaker and hip-hopper Pyramid Vritra, and Boardwalk, a dream-pop duo.

Other acts appearing on the CD include Streets of Laredo, a NYC-based indie-folk quintet from New Zealand; Evolfo, a seven-piece, East Coast, punk-funk septet; Blank Tapes, a prolific Los Angeles group that creates “1960’s inspired psychedelic-surf-pop-folk-rock”; Phoenix-based ska band Liam and the Ladies; two groups from Austin, Texas, Wild Child and Technicolor Hearts; and more.

KCSB-FM also made sure to live up to its strongly local sensibility by including a beatbox intro by Santa Barbara funk/jazz/rock/world duo Whoolilicious; Cub’B (Chris Cubbison), a “sample beats” artist, KCSB alumnus, and 2014 UCSB graduate; Easter Teeth, a Santa Barbara indie-rock quartet that fuses post-punk and neo-soul influences; and Remambran, a “heavy pop” duo that features KCSB/UCSB alumnus Mallory Watje and The Trashberries’ drummer Paul Rey.

KCSB General Manager and compilation producer R. Yibing Guo says, “Live in Studio A is something I have long wanted to do. So many cool things happen in this place I’ve called home for the past three years, I wanted to showcase it. As KCSB’s Music Director in 2013-14, I met many awesome musicians from both the local and indie scene who fill our public airwaves with amazing sounds. Since radio can seem fleeting, I started collecting recordings of their performances — like others at KCSB. A product of love and dedication from our programmers and staff, this release highlights artists we admire and believe in. It is also a reflection of who we are, what we do, and why we are proud to be part of KCSB.”

The compilation pulled from KCSB shows “Future Daze,” “5…4…3…2…fun!!”, “The Freak Power Ticket,” “Cue the Blues,” “Las Flores,” and former programs “Boombox Surround Sound” and “Rambling Jams.”

Former KCSB Music Director and “Boombox Surround Sound” host Bennett Piscitelli (now a UCSB alumnus) explains Live in Studio A’s selection process. “Although a wide variety of acts appear on the compilation, we expect that other KCSB shows that regularly host guests, like ‘Roadtunes Sessions’ and ‘Word on the Streets,’ will also be included on future compilations. This release is just a sampling of some of KCSB’s best performances.”

Guo adds, “It’s impressive how these nineteen dynamic tracks reflect a little over a year at our station. Special props should be extended to our Chief Engineer Eric Fredricey, who has enhanced KCSB’s commitment to high-quality presentations of live in-studio performances.”

This limited-edition compact-disc release follows up on last year’s debut of KCSB’s Bank Burner Records imprint, a 7”-vinyl record with local indie-rock quartet Dante Elephante; however, station staffers see this digital compilation as a separate endeavor.

Seed money for KCSB’s live CD compilation (and the Bank Burner Records label) has come from general public support. Timed to coincide with KCSB’s Annual Fund Drive (November 12th-21st, 2014), all proceeds generated by Live in Studio A will go back into the diverse programs of volunteer-run KCSB-FM. CDs will be made available to donors during KCSB’s yearly Fund Drive and, as a promotional giveaway, they will also later help to introduce the station to new listeners.
