On Monday’s edition of “The Freak Power Ticket,” producer / host Ted Coe previewed this Friday’s special celebration of The Smiths and Morrissey at Del Pueblo Cafe (May 15th), as DJ Darla Bea’s annual Morrissey birthday bash includes a local debut performance by LA-based group Mariachi Manchester.
Yesterday morning, the music-and-cultural-arts program featured a phone interview with Moises Baqueiro, aka “Moisessey” of Mariachi Manchester, “[t]he very first mariachi inglés from eastlos… A humble Mariachi tribute to the music of The Smiths/Morrissey.” Baquiero is formerly the bassist of Los Abandoned. (While his new ensemble also has ties to the Grammy-winning Latin pop group from Los Angeles, La Santa Cecilia.) A PODCAST OF THE CONVERSATION CAN BE FOUND BELOW (for download or streaming.)
The preview of the 56th birthday bash for Steven Patrick Morrissey also featured the ultra-hip sounds of SoCal’s mariachi revival, an overview of the “industrial pop music” of contemporary Manchester, England, plus covers and original songs by The Smiths and Moz himself — who will turn 56 on May 22nd.
Del Pueblo Cafe is in the Magnolia Center in Santa Barbara (5134 Hollister Ave.).
“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the spring from 11am-12noon PDT.
