Monday’s broadcast of “The Freak Power Ticket” (March 2nd) featured producer/host Ted Coe in conversation with filmmaker, record producer, musician, and GNP-Crescendo Records president Neil Norman, who previewed the local debut of his feature rockumentary, The Seeds: Pushin’ Too Hard, about the legendary psychedelic garage-rock band that emerged during the mid-1960s. The film will screen this Saturday, March 7th, 7pm, at the Plaza Playhouse Theater in Carpinteria.

The hourlong special explored the four-year lifespan of the influential rock’n’roll quartet that shot to stardom in Los Angeles and throughout the West Coast, had a Top 40 hit (with the titular song, “Pushin’ Too Hard”), and released other singles that also registered on the pop music charts. The group was noteworthy not only for its edgy proto-punk sound, but also for popularizing the idea of a countercultural “Flower Power.”

Frontman Sky Saxon went on to join the Source Family religious commune in the early 1970s, suffered from drug-induced mental illness, and even endured a period of homelessness, before reemerging with a reformed band lineup, dubbed Sky Saxon and The Seeds. He died in 2009.

The Seeds: Pushin’ Too Hard reappraises of the group and its impact, and features interviews with the late rock-music producer Kim Fowley, musicians Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys and Johnny Echols of Love, and fans like The Bangles and punk icon Iggy Pop.

The recording also features Norman’s tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy (“Mr. Spock”): as GNP-Crescendo Records is the premier source of Star Trek soundtrack music worldwide.

Neil Norman will be appearing at this Saturday’s screening with the film’s producer Alec Palao and special guests, with a Q&A to follow. Tickets are on-sale now, online HERE, at Seastrand boutique (919 Linden Avenue), and at the door starting at 6pm that evening. The Plaza Playhouse Theater is 4916 Carpinteria Ave.
