Palestinians held in Israeli prisons in contravention of international law have been on hunger strike for weeks. UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian Human Rights, Prof. Richard Falk, examines the failure of governments and media to address this human crisis. He addresses hunger strikes as non-violent resistance and the practices of arbitrary arrests and ‘administrative detention’ which are precipitating them. In the second hour, John Carlos, one of the two US athletes who raised their fists in protest as they were awarded medals at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, talks about his participation in that event and the political climate in which it occurred. Between interviews, Elizabeth Robinson looks at a bit of news.
