PAINT THE WHITE HOUSE BLACK (George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic) – CLICK TO ENLARGE

To commemorate both Presidents’ Day and February as Black History Month, this morning’s edition of “The Freak Power Ticket” will “Paint the White House Black” with a playlist of important Black Rock and Afro-Punk artists, from the psychedelic-rock era through today.

Jimi Hendrix, Funkadelic, and Prince made today’s cut, but the rest of the playlist features band-names and artists who are much less recognized for their place in the history of rock’n’roll music, but deserving of greater acknowledgment: The Coup, Garland Jeffreys, Stew & The Negro Problem, The Bellrays, Tamar-Kali, Ursula Rucker, The Gories, The Dears, Death, Bad Brains, Ten Grand, and Fishbone.

Stay tuned at show’s end, too, for a bonus sneak-peek at an important musical artist set to perform soon in our area: on Thursday, February 28th, “lo-fi legend” R. Stevie Moore will play at the Biko Infoshop in Isla Vista, with tour mates Lake (from Olympia, WA) and Plateaus (San Diego). Showtime is 730-10pm.

UPDATE: Here’s Today’s Playlist!

“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the winter from 11am-12noon.
