remembering Frederick Douglass
February 14 marks the 196th birthday of Frederick Douglass, one of the great figures of American history. An escaped slave, he became a globally visible leader of the anti-slavery movement, whose writings and speeches were famous in his day and became permanent texts in defining the black liberation struggle. This week we’ll listen to readings from Douglass’ speaking and writing, by Ossie Davis and Frederick Morsell, and hear some of the slave songs that Douglass understood to be testimonies to the slaves’ yearning for liberation.
