Roderick James Byers (aka Roddy Radiation), is lead guitarist of the original 2 Tone Ska band The Specials, as well as a playing in Rockabilly acts like the Bonediggers and Roddy Radiation and The Tearjerkers.
On Monday morning, June 2nd, from 11am-12noon PDT, Radiation will be LIVE in-studio on the music-and-cultural-arts program “The Freak Power Ticket,” performing and sharing stories with producer / host Ted Coe — and with special guest-host Zac Pike (Dynamic Pressure and The Sandollar Sound), and other surprise guests.
Their current group, Roddy Radiation and The U.S. Skabilly Rebels, will be playing locally this coming Thursday night, June 5th, 8pm, at The Imperial lounge (320 S. Kellogg Ave. in Goleta). General admission tickets for this 21-and-over concert will be available at the door, which opens at 7pm.
The Specials were pioneering artists who combined the defiant musical energy of late-70s Punk Rock with the sounds of Jamaican Ska. Rocksteady, and early Reggae. Embodying an ideal of racial integration in the UK, they also had a profound impact around the globe.
We’ll hear about Roddy’s role in creating that sound, along with their forging of the (political and cultural) currents of Second-Wave Ska; his love of Glam and Rockabilly too; and much more.
“The Freak Power Ticket” airs on Mondays in the Spring from 11am-12noon PDT.
