Suddenly, and most unexpectedly, socialism is apparently alive in the popular mind. A hitherto marginalized socialist MP, Jeremy Corbyn, is elected in a landslide to lead the British Labour Party. Bernie sanders, is surging in the polls and building a large and enthusiastic electoral base in the US. Pope Francis soon to arrive in Cuba and the US< is preaching a strong critique of capitalism. Bernie reminded his evangelical student audience of Jesus’ teachings. So—this week, to take notice of all this a program centering on songs by leading British troubadours that speak to the  long socialist tradition in England and the ways that has been betrayed. And we’ll get a mini lecture from the staunch Labour Party socialist  MP Tony Benn in that vein. Bernie sanders recorded speeches of Eugene Debs who ran for president on the Socialist ticket 5 timss, including when he was in jail for making antiwar speeches.  And we’ll musically embrace the convergence of Pope’s voyage and the 42nd anniversary of the US sponsored overthrow of Chile’s elected socialist government.
