songs for disasters of March

The last days of March mark anniversaries of several historic disasters that illuminate deep societal oppressions and inequities: March 25, 1911—the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire; march 24, 1989—Exxon Valdez oil spill; March 20, 2003—US attacks Iraq; March 30 2004—the battle of Fallujah.

All of these had transformative effects on people’s perceptions of how the society works and on the nature of those in the seats of power. We’ll hear a sampling of the many songs that recount and reflect on these events, and, as songs can do, invoke some of their emotional and human impacts.
