About KCSB Sports

KCSB Sports is a part of the noncommercial community radio station KCSB-FM 91.9 in Santa Barbara, California, broadcasting live under Storke Tower on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. KCSB Sports aims to give students opportunities to cover athletic events on campus or in the community, giving them valuable experience in areas such as interviewing, writing scripts, and play-by-play broadcasting. The department also has a specific focus on professional development, hosting resume workshops, group demo critique and feedback, and inviting alumni or local figures that have had successful careers in the sports media world to speak.

KCSB Sports’ coverage follows Santa Barbara’s teams as far as they go, having traveled to New York, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Illinois, Minnesota, Utah, Hawaii, Ohio, and Virginia in recent years, even following the UCSB women’s basketball team to its NCAA Tournament match at the University of Virginia and the men’s soccer team to Columbus, OH for their Sweet Sixteen matchup in pursuit of the College Cup.

KCSB Sports is generously supported by the Ted Deixler Memorial Endowment Fund.

Our Mission Statement

The purpose of the sports department within KCSB is to provide non-commercial, alternative sports programming through live coverage harmonious with the station purpose and policies. KCSB Sports also aims to provide training for skills in sports reporting, play-by-play and color commentary, and discussion of alternative topics, as well as technical training for remote broadcasts using state-of-the-art equipment, engineering, audio/video recording and editing, and social media content management. KCSB Sports provides opportunities for students and community members to become involved in sports radio broadcasting in a fun, educational, team-oriented environment.
