This week, Culture of Protest streams on St. Patrick’s Day and since it’s March we want to continue our musical exploration of Herstory. Here’s what we’ll do to observe this conjunction: we’ll feature two new CD compilations—a 2 CD tribute to Mother Jones and a new compilation honoring James Connolly. Mother Mary Jones, one of the legendary icons of labor and women’s history, was born in County Cork. The recent tribute album, featuring new and old songs about her, is raising funds to restore her monument at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Illinois. James Connolly was the great socialist leader in the Irish rebellion, and this is the centenary of his death—he was one of those executed by the British for his role in the 1916 Easter Rebellion. He spent time in the US, was a great exponent of revolutionary song, and a friend of Mother Jones. Playing some of songs from his songbook is a good way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
