Saturday, December 1st, 2012 marked the 25th anniversary World AIDS Day, which focuses on raising awareness of the scourge of AIDS and HIV infection. Since its first recorded cases in 1981, the AIDS pandemic has killed more than 25 million people.

Today’s edition of “The Freak Power Ticket” commemorated this important day of public education and fundraising by spinning a playlist that addresses the topic of life in the age of AIDS: lyrically, or by virtue of their connections to artists lost to or otherwise affected by the disease.

Through their words and music, Femi Kuti, Big Audio Dynamite (with Mick Jones and Don Letts), Sugar (with Bob Mould), Lou Reed, Jimmy Somerville, Neneh Cherry, Spearhead (with Michael Franti), Billy Bragg, The Books with Jose Gonzalez, and Angela McCluskey all raised consciousness about figures and issues linked to the disease.

Also, songs on the playlist were by – or in memory of – musicians such as Fela Kuti, Gil Scott-Heron, Freddie Mercury, Lance Loud, Sylvester, Jobriath, Liberace, and Ricky Wilson of the B-52s.
