This month marked the 50th anniversary of Lenny Bruce’s most untimely death. And, simultaneously, Joe Morton has been starring on Broadway enacting the performances of Dick Gregory (who by the way still speaks his mind in his 80s). These two in the early sixties had culturally transformative effects doing stand-up comedy—breaking major taboos and using their time on stage to force Americans to see themselves even as they laughed. We’ll sample some of those performances from more than fifty years ago—performances that still bring shock and laughter. And Glen Yarborough, another of their cultural contemporaries– who died this week, will sing a farewell song.
